Restaurants & Food

You could say that the national pastime of the Cypriots is preparing and eating food.

In Cyprus, fine food and hospitality is a way of life, all Cypriots love to entertain and in the old days, strangers would very rarely pass a village house without being welcomed in for a coffee and a Glyko. At the coffee shops most visitors would be invited to join the locals for a coffee and a chat. This still happens today in most villages. You can still experience the real traditional way of life in most villages all over Cyprus.

Visitors to the island are often most surprised to see how much food is presented at a meal. Whether eating at a restaurant or in a Cypriot household, makes no difference; there will be a variety of foods to sample. If the food is all eaten, the Cypriot householder feels that he has not cooked enough, there must always be lots left over.
Many guests have asked Christalla for her traditional recipes that she decided to add her own recipe website to the interet. Many of these recipes were passed on to me by my mother and her mother before her and I learned to cook them as a child by helping my mother prepare them. This will help to explain why many are not in the usual formal recipe format as I am not used to weighing or measuring quantities. These recipes can be found at Flavours of Cyprus

On a visit to a local taverna you will be presented with traditional Cyprus Meze. There are two types of Cyprus Meze, Fish Meze and Meat Meze, sometimes you get a mixture of both. Whichever you opt for, you will be presented with a myriad of dishes, be warned, pace yourself if you want to sample everything or else you will not be able to move by the end of the meal.

History has played a big part in the development of Cyprus Cuisine. The strategic location of the island has seen many nations come and go; the Phoenicians, the Egyptians, the Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Lusignans, Venetians, Ottomans and the British have all had a share in influencing the food and traditions of the island of Cyprus.
